Haryana had witnessed large scale violence for almost ten days in February with rampaging mobs looting and setting shops on fire, burning Government and private buildings and vehicles and clashing with security forces during the Jat quota stir.
A total of 30 persons had died while more than 300 persons had sustained injuries including personnel belonging to police and other security forces during the agitation. Also, as many as 2,040 FIRs were registered during the agitation, of which 446 were theft-related, 873 property-related, 16 death-related and 705 were for blockading of roads and encumbrance in Government duty.
Following this, the BJP led State Government had promised to pay `10 lakh and give a Government job to the kin of those killed.
However, cabinet ministers and other BJP leaders had expressed disapproval over the announcement of compensation of `10 lakh and a job to the next of the kin of those who were killed in the violence. The leaders had suggested that compensation should be first released to those who suffered huge losses due to property damage.
Haryana Health and Sports Minister Anil Vij and Food and Supplies Minister, Karan Dev Kamboj in the Manohar lal Khattar Government had also expressed their displeasure over the handling of Jat agitation by the Manohar lal Khattar led State Government . Anil Vij had even threatened to resign on the issue and pointed out that most of those killed could be involved in rioting and they could not be compensated.
later, the Chief Minister had announced that the compensation would be given only to the families of innocent victims that lost their lives during Jat stir.
Jat leaders had however condemned the State Government for the decision. leader of opposition in Haryana Assembly and INlD’s senior leader Abhay Chautala and All India Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti president Yashpal Malik had demanded that compensation should be given to the families of all 30 people that had died during Jat stir.
