Haryana Women and Child Development Minister, Kavita Jain on Saturday directed Superintendent of Police (Railways) to conduct probe into the death of hockey player Jyoti Gupta. The Minister visited the residence of Jyoti’s father, Pramod Gupta, in Sonepat and expressed condolences and solidarity with the bereaved family.
Recalling her meetings with Jyoti during various sports events, Jain said that her demise was an irreparable loss for the entire state. She also assured to extend all possible assistance so that Jyoti’s siblings may continue their studies without any hindrance.
At the family’s request, Jain directed Superintendent of Police (Railways), Kamal Deep Goyal, to conduct probe into the matter. The national-level hockey player was found dead on the railway tracks in Haryana’s Rewari, two days ago.
The driver of the Chandigarh-Jaipur Intercity Express reported that a young woman suddenly appeared before the train when it was crossing an overbridge near the Rewari station late in the evening. The woman was run over by the train despite brakes being pulled by the driver.
When the GRP was informed, the hockey player’s body was found at the spot.
No suicide note was found from the spot. Her family members told the police that there was no reason for her to end her life like this and could not believe that she could commit suicide.
Jyoti had left home on Wednesday and told her parents that she was going to the Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, to get the spelling of her name corrected in her certificate.
Her family said Jyoti had called them in the evening and told them that her bus has broken down and that she will get a bit late in reaching home.
