Haryana leaders hits out at Tharoor on remarks on Manushi Chillar

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor continued to face the ire of Haryana politicians for taking a dig at Miss World Manushi Chhillar's surname.

Haryana Women and Child Development Minister Kavita Jain on Monday slammed Tharoor, saying he has indulged in callous and reckless wordplay on new Miss World Manushi Chhillar".

Asking him to apologise, Jain said Haryana-born Manushi Chhillar was not just the pride of Haryana, but also of the entire nation. “Tharoor has only exposed his own debased thinking by questioning the self-respect of our daughters, the pride of the country, and the brave community 'Chhillar',” Jain added.

Haryana Finance Minister Capt. Abhimanyu, Health Minister Anil Vij, leader of opposition and INlD senior leader Abhay Singh Chautala also lashed out at Tharoor for his tweet.

Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda also slammed Tharoor for his tweet saying that the party leader should not use such language against the girl who has made India proud. Hooda went on to say, “If we were in power, we would have rewarded Manushi with a flat in Gurugram and cash prize of Rs 5-6 crore.”

Tharoor had in a tweet attacked the Centre over demonetisation by using new Miss World Manushi Chhillar's surname.

“What a mistake to demonetise our currency! BJP should have realised that Indian cash dominates the globe: look, even our Chhillar has become Miss World!" Tharoor had said on Twitter, seemingly punning on the word 'chillar', which means "loose change" in Hindi.

Tharoor later apologised for his remark, which, he said, was a "light-hearted" comment and also praised Manushi Chhillar.

However, a post on Manushi’s as-yet unverified Twitter account backs him up. “A girl who has just won the world isn't going to be upset over a tongue-in-cheek remark. 'Chhillar' talk is just small change - let's not forget the 'chill' within Chhillar,” reads Manushi's tweet.
