The Manohar lal Khattar Government may have been busy in bringing in a new education policy or introducing Gita shlokas and yoga to school curriculum intending to improve the quality of education, but the State continues to witness poor academic performance of the students.
The internal assessment by the State Education Department put forth dismal performance of the students from class I to VIII. The state’s monthly assessment demonstrates that a large percentage of students in government schools have poor learning skills.
According to the latest monthly assessment report of the Department, more than 70 percent students of classes III, V, VI, VIII could not score 50 percent or more marks in English. Only 34 per cent students of class III, 24 per cent of class IV and 34 per cent of class V, 21 per cent students of class VI, 27 per cent of class VI and 28 per cent students of class VIII could score 50 per cent or more in English during the monthly assessment to evaluate learning ability of students in government schools.
What’s worse, only 23 per cent students in class VI, 28 percent students in class VII and 30 per cent in class VIII in the entire state manage to score 50 per cent or more in Mathematics.
The students also failed to perform well in other subjects including Hindi, Environment Studies, Social Science and Science.
More than 72 per cent students in Class VI failed to score 50 per cent or higher than that in Social Science and Science.
Around 16.1 lakh students, which is 92 per cent of the total students, appeared in the monthly assessment tests that had been made mandatory by Haryana Government earlier this year for continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) of students from class I to VIII, to improve learning outcome of the students and teaching in the government schools.
As per the assessment, the top performing districts are Mahendergarh, Gurgaon, Jhajjar and Rewari while Mewat, Palwal and Yamuna Nagar remained the worst performing districts in the state. The assessment observed that performance of students has continuously decreased from class I to IV in Mathematics while in English, it decreased continuously in class III and VI
Notably, the State had witnessed worst ever HBSE (Haryana Board of School Education) results for class X and XII this year registering pass percentage of only 41.28 per cent and 53.96 per cent, respectively.
Also, strange as it many sound but witnessing the poor academic performance and low learning ability of their children, the parents in Haryana had recently put up requests with the teachers not to pass their wards in primary classes.
As per the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER 2014) released earlier this year, the performance of privates chools was found to be much better than government schools in Haryana.
Shockingly, only 48.7 per cent in Std V could read English words while 50 percent in Std V could not read English sentences.
In case of children in Std III who can do atleast subtraction, there were only 24 per cent in government schools in 2014.
