Haryana honour killing: Youth beheaded, girl lynched

A day after another honour killing of a couple in Haryana, the police arrested three persons for perpetrating the heinous crime and launched a manhunt to arrest the other accused.

A 19-year-old girl was thrashed to death while her 23-year-old friend was first brutally thrashed, his legs and hands fractured and then beheaded by the girl’s kin in Garnawathi village under Kalanaur police Station on Wednesday evening.  The police have arrested the girl’s father, Narender alias Billu, her mother Rita and uncle Ravinder after registering a case of murder against them.

Though the police have also booked three others, including brother of the girl, under the same sections, they are absconding. Both the girl, Nidhi (19) and the boy, Dharmender (23), belonging to Jat caste, were neighbours and were having an affair for the past several months. The girl was studying in a vocational course while her boy friend was also a student at a local college in Rohtak.

Kin of the girl were against this relationship claiming that centuries-old social custom here did not allow such relationship within a village.  In Haryana, as per the diktat of Khap panchayats, marriages within the same village and community are not allowed.Fearing reprisal, the couple eloped from the village on Tuesday. Kin of the girl did not lodge any complaint with the police and started searching them on their own. They got success on Wednesday when the couple was tracked down while roaming in Delhi. The kin brought them to the village assuring them that they would not do anything wrong with them and also try to resolve the issue, said the police.

On reaching the village, the girl’s father and uncle allegedly hacked Dharmender to death and also thrashed Nidhi to death at their house in. While the body of the boy was dumped outside his house in the village, the relatives took the body of the girl for cremation secretly, said the police.Meanwhile, someone informed the police about the incident. Taking a swift action on the information, the police rushed to the village and stopped the cremation. It then retrieved the half-burnt body of the girl and sent it to the PGIMS along with the body of the boy for post mortem examination.

“The girl’s kin have, during interrogation, confessed to their crime. Narender, Rita and Ravinder were produced today before a local court which ordered police remand for Narender and Ravinder for five days and sent Rita to judicial custody,” said Rohtak police chief Rajesh Duggal while interacting with media persons here.

He said the body of Dharmender was handed over to their kin after post mortem examination. A hunt has also been launched to nab the other accused, including the girl’s brother, Sunny, his friend Rajesh and car driver Mahesh alias Chhippi, he added. The SP maintained that a special team led by a DSP had been constituted to probe into the matter thoroughly, besides ascertaining the involvement of other persons in the crime.

“Efforts are also being made to recover the car in which the couple were brought back to Garnavati village and the weapons used in the crime,” said Duggal, adding that the absconding accused would also be arrested soon as raids were being carried out at their possible hideouts.

Meanwhile, a large number of police personnel have been deputed in the village to prevent any untoward incident. Residents of the village are choosing to keep mum over the issue. No one was ready to talk to media persons when they visited the village to cover the incident.
