Haryana Govt draws flak over teacher-cops clash in Karnal

Published on:

The Haryana Congress on Tuesday flayed the Manohar lal Khattar-led Haryana Government for being brutal on guest teachers who were cane-charged in Karnal. Several persons, including women teachers had sustained injuries after members of the Haryana Guest Teachers’ Association (HGTA) clashed with the police in Karnal on Sunday evening. A day after, the police had booked 3,050 guest teachers for creating ruckus, pelting stones, disrupting law and order during a clash with the police.

Kiran Choudhry, leader of the Haryana Congress legislature Party (ClP) on Tuesday said that more than 15,000 guest teachers have been protesting for the past ten days, demanding regularisation of their services, a promise made by the BJP in the run-up to the Assembly elections last year. In a statement issued here, the former Excise and Taxation minister said, “The BJP had promised the guest teachers regularisation of services, but after assuming power, instead of keeping its promise, the BJP Government has given them lathi blows.”

“While computer teachers were cane-charged in Panchkula; in Karnal, the guest teachers faced the wrath of the Khattar administration which has failed to keep even a single promise made to the people,” Choudhry stated. “By using the police force, the BJP Government is trying to crush the voice of guest teachers and computer teachers. It should accept all their genuine demands as soon as possible. If it is not done, the agitation would be spread across the State and the situation may go out of control,” she said.

The teacher –police clash on Sunday had erupted when hundreds of guest teachers tried to gherao the canal rest house on the Mall Road, the designated camp office of the CM. Since then, the irate teachers have been holding protests and raising slogans against Chief Minister and Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma and burning their effigies at various places of the State.
