Haryana DGP directs to maintain law & order

In view of ongoing strike by municipal employees in Haryana, the State police on Tuesday directed senior police functionaries at commissionerate and district level to keep a close eye and take adequate and effective measures to prevent any untoward incident in the state.

In a written communication addressed to all Commissioners of Police, Superintendents of Police and SP Railways Ambala Cantt., Haryana Director General of Police, BS Sandhu has directed them to personally monitor the situation in their respective jurisdiction and also put in place adequate police personnel to ensure law and order.

Around 30,000 employees including safai karamcharis of over 80 municipal corporations, municipal committees and councils had begun their strike on Wednesday in Haryana.

A day before, they had announced to extend their protest till May 17 as their talks with the State Government had failed to yield a positive result.

Garbage has piled up in different areas of Haryana following the strike, which entered seventh day on Tuesday.

The main demands of the agitating employees are regularisation of contractual employees and equal pay for equal work. The other major demands of the striking employees include hike in minimum pay of safai karamcharis, implementation of cashless medical facilities for contractual employees, increasing allowances of both permanent and contractual employees, risk allowance and better safety equipment for those engaged in cleaning sewers.

The Haryana Government has already made it clear that the demand of protesting employees was unjustifiable because on September 2, 2016, the double bench of court had put stay on all regularisation policies issued on and after June 16, 2014.

Meanwhile, the opposition parties have asked the Haryana Government to immediately accept the justifiable demands of the protesting employees.
