Haryana committed to Jat reservation: AG Mahajan

Published on:

Haryana Advocate General Baldev Raj Mahajan on Friday said that the State Government is committed to defend the inclusion of Jat Community in Special Backward Classes.

“The State Government is already in the process of filing a Special leave Petition in the Supreme Court against the stay order of Punjab and Haryana High Court dated July 27, 2015,” said Mahajan while replying to a calling attention notice regarding inclusion of Jat Community in the Central list of Other Backward Classes during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Haryana Vidhan Sabha.

He made it clear that the sensitive subject of inclusion of Jat Community in the Central list of Other Backward Castes lies in the domain of Central Government and not of the State Government.

Mahajan said that the issue of reservation to five castes including Jat, Jat Sikh, Ror, Tyagi and Bishnoi in services and admission in educational Institutions stands challenged by various individuals and associations in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. As these orders, only restrained the state and not quashed the reservations to Special Backward Classes (SBC), the State Government has issued guidelines for educational institutions and recruitments in the state, said he.

The calling attention motion on ‘Jat reservation’ issue was moved by leader of opposition and INlD senior leader Abhay Chautala on Friday. The discussion on the issue witnessed noisy scenes after the Speaker Kanwar Pal Gujjar withdrew the calling attention motion saying ‘The sub-judice matter can not be discussed in the House.”

Notably, Haryana Jats have announced a protest on September 28 in New Delhi's Jantar Matar. The Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (JASS) has launched a nationwide drive to 'recruit' Jat youths for the Jat Yuva Sena (Young Jat Army) to fight the reservation battle.

The Jat community has also launched a Facebook page, besides a Whatsapp group, to attract Jat youths to join the Jat Yuva Sena. Haryana's Jat community is fighting for reservations for the last several years. The community forms nearly 30 per cent of the State's electorate. While 25 per cent of Jats in Haryana being Hindus, 4 per cent consists of Sikhs and one per cent is Muslims.
