Amidst controversy over the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Haryana Chief Minister Manohar lal Khattar has supported the concept and said such registration should also be done at the national level.

The Chief Minister, while responding to the queries of mediapersons regarding NRC in Haryana said that the decision regarding conducting NRC in other States will be taken by the Centre and we will act only after the directions from the Central Government.

A registration of such kind should be done at the national level, he added.

Earlier, Haryana leaders from the BJP had demanded that NRC process should be started in the State. Chandigarh BJP president Sanjay Tandon on Tuesday also supported NRC and demanded that this should be done in Chandigarh to identify illegal immigrants.

Following the NRC in Assam, the opposition parties have accused the BJP led Central Government of dividing people on the religious lines, however, the BJP, has rubbished the opposition claims terming the exercise a positive step to identify illegal immigrants in the country.

The NRC final draft, which was released in July had included names of 2.89 crore people out of 3.29 crore applicants, in Assam. It had left out names of nearly 40 lakh people. The list has been updated for the first time since 1951, to account for illegal migration from nearby Bangladesh.
