Punjab Education Department on Friday issued new guidelines regarding the naming of educational institutions after eminent personalities.
At the same time, the department has made it clear that the name of a school would not be changed on the mere basis of financial donations.
“The school would be named after prominent people excelling in various fields and earning top most honours in States or the country. Before naming the school after a famous personality, his or her life and achievements would be minutely analysed,” said a spokesperson of the Education Department.
If a person makes a donation concerning some limited projects for example construction of a room, library, laboratory or shed, the name of that person would be engraved on the plaque outside the project, he added.
He said that the schools would be named only after freedom fighters belonging to the State, persons contributing in the historical and cultural spheres, gallantry award winners of military and civil operations.
He elaborated that a state-level committee would scrutinise the case of changing the name of an educational institution before sending it over to the State Government.
“Director General, School Education (DGSE) would be the chairman of the committee while the Punjab School Education Board secretary, a representative of the Secretary of the Tourism and Cultural Affairs Department, Deputy Commissioner of the concerned district, DPI (Secondary Education), DPI (Elementary Education) and two academicians would be the members of the committee,” he said.
