Govt policies only wasting public money: Haryana Congress

Published on:

Haryana Congress on Monday alleged that some of the high-octane policies and programmes launched by the BJP Government led by Manohar lal Khattar, with great fanfare, have come a cropper.

If facts and figures are any indication, at least two schemes — ‘Beti-Bachao-Beti Padhao’ and Swachh Haryana”— have failed to produce any results making crores of rupees of tax payer’s hard earned money go down the drain, Kiran Choudhry, leader of the Haryana Congress legislature Party, pointed out, demanding a relook at the policies.

In a statement issued here, the former Excise and Taxation Minister, said that despite the BJP Government splurging crores of rupees on the promotion of the Centre’s ambitious ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ scheme aimed at setting right the skewed sex ratio and discrimination against the girl child, has failed to make any impact with most districts witnessing decline in the sex ratio. Mahendergarh continues to hold to distinction of being the worst district, recording sex ratio at birth of 735 girls per 1,000 boys. Concerted drive against the menace of female foeticide notwithstanding, the districts of Rewari, Kaithal, Sonepat, Panchkula, Ambala, Bhiwani, Hisar, Mewat, Karnal, Gurgaon, Fatehabad have witnessed decline in the child sex ratio. Between January, 2015 and July, 2015, Ambala witnessed dip in sex ratio at birth from 984 in January to 842 girls per 1000 boys in July, she said.

Referring to ‘Swachh Haryana’ campaign launched by the BJP Government, Choudhry pointed out that some cities were experiencing alarming levels of air pollution. BJP Government’s campaign, climate change action plan and stringent laws to improve air quality notwithstanding, people in most cities of the State continue to be exposed to toxic air.

As per the data, major cities of Haryana, including Faridabad, Gurgaon, Sonepat, Panipat, Panchkula and Yamunanagar, have high concentration of PM10 — particulate matters of the size of 10 micrograms — form of pollution in cities. The permissible limit of PM 10 exceeds in all these cities except Gurgaon, she added, asking the BJP to give the schemes another look to make them effective.
