The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has swung into action to help Haryana based gold medal winning boxer Rishu Mittal after the media highlighted how she has been pushed to work as a domestic maid to support her livelihood.

The Union Ministry on Thursday asked Haryana Government, Sports Authority of India and Boxing India to examine the case of boxer Rishu Mittal and explore the possibilities of helping her to pursue career in boxing.

A communication regarding this has been sent by the Union Ministry to these three authorities on Thursday.

Rishu had won a gold medal in the 46 kg category for Haryana in the National Games held at Gwalior in December last. Rishu, 16, is an orphan and she has been working as a domestic maid to support her studies.

A day before, Haryana Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Anil Vij had announced to give financial assistance of Rsone lakh to Rishu, a resident of Kaithal. An offer was also given to her for enrollment in National Sports Academy where all facilities including diet, clothes, medicines etc are provided free of cost.

At present, the player is getting training in academy and a stipend of Rs2,000 was being given to her. Rishu, a student of class X, took to domestic work as her parents had passed away and her brother was able to earn only a meagre amount by working in a shop.

Her coach Rajinder Singh had highlighted her story saying that if Rishu gets some support from the Government, she can make the country proud like MC Mary Kom.
