Girl students of different schools and colleges on Monday blocked the Jhajjar-Rohtak road at Toll Plaza of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) adjacent to Dighal village for over two hours.
The protesting girls sat on middle of the road and disrupted the vehicular traffic leading to long queues of vehicles on both sides of the road. They were demanding separate roadways buses for women on the route stating that girls had to face lot of difficulties in traveling in private buses and jeeps to go to their schools and colleges.
“Hundreds of girls from nearby villages daily go to Rohtak or Jhajjar for studies but they have to face lot of difficulty in reaching their schools and colleges due to non-availability of separate roadways buses for women,” said a protesting student, adding that in the given situation, they had not other option but to travel either in private buses or in jeeps which were not safe for them.
She maintained that they had been raising this justified demand for a long time but no district administrative officer was ready to pay any heed
to it. The protesting students said they were forced to take this step of blocking the road to attract the attention of district authorities towards their demand.
On getting information about the blockade, Beri Police Station incharge Ajay Dhankhar rushed to the spot and tried to persuade the protesting girls to clear the road but they did not relent and sought senior administrative official for listening to their grievances. Thereafter, Dhankhar got the protesting girls to talk to General Manager (Roadways) over phone.
The GM assured them to ply separate buses for women on the route soon. Then the protesting girls cleared the road.
