Gian Sagar orders nursing staff to 'look glamorous'

In an “unusual move”, the Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital has issued orders to the nursing staff to “look glamorous” while on duty. At a recent meeting of the nursing staff whose strength in the institute is pegged at about 100, Chief Executive Officer Dr Shailendra Chaudhary, and General Manager (Marketing) Natasha Chopra advised the nurses to use the “vanity kit” issued to them earlier last month and ensure that they look good while on duty. They were told to have a look in the mirror at least once in an hour.

The nursing staff, however, pointed out that it might be demeaning for them to don a glamorous look at the medical institution.  One of the nurses said that nursing was a noble profession and they were addressed as “sisters” since they serve the patients. They were backbone of the medical care system and looks were not at all important. “looking good should not be a consideration in this profession where we are supposed to be tending the sick and those in pain,” said another nurse on condition of anonymity.

A number of nurses have voiced their concerns against the “unusual directions” of the college management and requested anonymity in view of the atmosphere of panic and uncertainty prevailing in the Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital following a change of guard in the management. The new management has already unceremoniously removed the institute’s Principal Dr Jasbir Kaur a couple of weeks back.

After that a number of senior faculty members have been given dismissal orders or termination of service notices including head of the radio-diagnostics department Dr Bhardwaj, head of the plastic surgery department Dr GP Singh and a senior professor in the blood bank Dr RS Shah.Sources said that about half a dozen senior doctors have already been given the dismissal orders as a consequence of which the faculty and paramedics are working in an atmosphere of panic and uncertainty.
