Patiala MP, Dharam Vira Gandhi wants the bonafide migrants of partition of India and Pakistan to connect with their roots.
Aam Aadmi Party’s “suspended” MP Gandhi on Monday requested the Union Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj to take up the issue with her Pakistani counterpart.
He urged the Minister to talk to Pak authorities to allow bonafide migrants of partition from both countries to visit their birth places, along with one attendant. He also demanded that visas, to all such people, should be issued on compassionate grounds.
Gandhi, in a letter to Swaraj, stated, “The people of Punjab on both sides of border suffered huge loss in terms of human lives during the partition of 1947 of the state and are still suffering from simmering wounds of partition and memories attached with it. This is more true in case of older generation on both sides of the border and thousands, if not lakhs, in their late 70s or 80s have a strong yearning to visit their native birth places on both sides of the border.”
He suggested that applications may be invited from the Ministry from such aspirant people from Pakistan and liberal visas should be issued to them too.
