Frozen bovine semen hits bull's eye

Published on:

Punjab and Haryana have their own “Vicky Donors”; and the paid ‘donations’ already made by one of them are helping the farmers, not only across the region, but in India and abroad, in improving the livestock.

Not even Yuvraj’s owner really knows how many “donations” the young bull from Kurukshetra has made, but he readily tells you that the services are available for not less than Rs 800.

His younger brother from Moga, Balli, is too young to “work”, but in about six months his semen too will be available, at Rs 300. The duo has worth in crores of rupees. While Yuvraj’s owners get the offer of Rs 2 crore for him from Andhra Pradesh, Balli’s price was decided as Rs 1 crore by the Haryana Semen Bank.

But, their owners are in no mood to sell them off.

ReasonsIJ The five-time India champion Yuvraj is a virtual moneyspinner for its owner Karamvir Singh of Sunariya village in Kurukshetra district. The murrah adult bull has assured his owner an annual income of Rs 40 lakh from the sale of his semen.

“We earn something about Rs 40 lakh ever year from the sale of his semen all across India. We have sold his semen in Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and in Brazil too,” said Karamvir, while fondling with Yuvraj, who was put on display during the ongoing Punjab Agriculture Summit at Chappar Chiri in Mohali. “Each shot of his semen was sold at a rate of Rs 800… and approximately 15,000-20,000 doses of semen are sold every year,” he added.

But rearing this five-and-a-half-year-old bull is no easy task. “We have daily expenditure of Rs 2,000 on him. He takes 20 kilo of milk everyday and five kilo  apples, besides daily animal feed,” said Karamvir, adding that one-hour walk is must for him.

Owning Karamvir Dairy Farms, he also have a website on which he sell his semen online.

Yuvraj’s younger brother Balli is not behind! All set to attain the age of breeding and producing semens, his each shot will pull

in Rs 300.

But even before that he has proved a cash-cow for his owners. “Till date, he has earned around Rs 2 lakh in various championships,” said his owner Jai Singh from Badhni Kalan in Moga district. The three-and-a-half-year-old Balli is the first prize winner in the recently-held National livestock Championship at Muktsar.

Already, Jai Singh has been approached by thousands of people to get his semen, but he has tied up with the Hisar Semen Bank. Balli’s every day expense is Rs 800, and his diet includes 10 kilo milk, two kilo dana, and gur (jaggery).

In fact, it is their genetic background that helps in evaluating cost of its semen. Having a strong genetic background, Balli’s mother yields 24.4 kilo milk, while his grandmother yields 28.6 kilo. Yuvraj’s mother produces 26.4 kg milk in a day. Murrah breed traditionally belongs to Rohtak in Haryana, and Murrah breed is favoured as it has high yield.
