As senior Akali leader Sarwan Singh Phillaur submitted his resignation on Thursday, the Enforcement Directorate is expected to issue fresh summons to his son Damanjit Singh in connection with Rs5,000 crore synthetic drug racket.
“We will issue fresh summons in June to Damanjit Singh in order to question him for his links with drug lord Jagdish Singh Bhola,” an Enforcement Directorate official said on the condition of anonymity.
This would be Damanjit’s fourth summons, as he was earlier served summons by the ED in February, March and April to join the investigations. Citing poor health, Damanjit had sought more time to join the investigation, the ED official said.
Damanjit’s father Phillaur, the MlA from Kartarpur who held the portfolio of Jails, Tourism and Cultural Affairs in the SAD-BJP Government, on Thursday resigned from the Council of Ministers “on moral grounds” following reports of the alleged involvement of a member of his family in drug trade.
Damanjit’s name cropped up during the inquiry into the dealings of drug racket kingpin and sacked Punjab police DSP Jagdish Singh Bhola.
ED is carrying out its investigation into the case under the provisions of the Prevention of Money laundering Act. Punjab police had last year busted a major drug racket in the state and nabbed Bhola, who allegedly used to supply narcotics to the USA and some European countries.
Meanwhile, Phillaur claimed that nobody from his family was involved in the drug racket and said that he would resign from SAD if the allegations against his son were proved to be correct. “My family is not involved at all in it (drug racket),” he said.
