BJP national chairman of Committee on legal Affairs and Election Commission issues and former city MP Satya Pal Jain on Sunday urged Arun Grover, Panjab University Vice Chancellor to hold an independent enquiry into the allegations of irregularities in students’ elections held in PU on September 4.
The allegations were leveled by Joint Action Committee of PU students against the elections held to Panjab University Students Council. Jain, also a member of PU Senate and Syndicate has written a letter to Vice Chancellor in this regard. In his letter, Jain said that the allegations leveled by the students about the violations of lyngdoh Committee norms are quite serious and they need to be enquired into by holding an independent enquiry. He said that if there are certain grievances or complaints in the mind of a section of the students, it is the legal as well as moral duty of Panjab University authorities to remove those grievances from their minds by holding independent and impartial enquiry into those allegations.
Jain said that this is also essential for creating a congenial atmosphere in the campus. A delegation of Joint Action Committee of Panjab University, consisting of representatives of various students’ organizations like SOPU, PUSU, ABVP etc. had met Jain and gave him a memorandum and urged him to take up the matter with the university authorities. Jain assured them that he will take up the matter with Panjab University Authorities.
A day before, former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Harmohan Dhawan had visited Punjab University campus and met the student union leaders sitting on hunger strike demanding removal of Chandan Rana — an NSUI candidate — from Punjab University Student Council’s president’s post, which he won recently in PU student poll.
The senior leader had pledged his support to the students’ movement.
