To curb incidents of crop residue burning, Haryana’s Fatehabad District Administration has annouced an incentive of Rs 50,000 for those gram panchayats which would put an end to such incidents.
This amount would be used for various development works in villages, said Deputy Commissioner, Hardeep Singh.
He said that the incidents of burning crop residue in district Fatehabad is being regularly monitored by the Haryana Space Applications Centre through satellite.
Singh said that the crop residue burning has been identified as a major health hazard. In addition to exposing people in the immediate vicinity to extremely high levels of particulate matter concentration, it is also a major regional source of pollution. It also causes loss of vital components such as nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur and potassium from the top soil layer, making the land less fertile and unviable for agriculture in the long run, said he.
Singh added that if a farmer was found guilty of burning crop residue, he
would have to pay penalty of Rs 2,500 for two acres, Rs 5,000 for two to five acres, and Rs 15,000 for more than five acres, per incident.
