Farmers hit by demonetisation, says Haryana Congress

Published on:

The Congress on Friday hit out at the BJP-led Central and Haryana Governments for ignoring the farmers, who are hit badly due to demonetisation.

Haryana Congress chief Ashok Tanwar and Kiran Choudhry, leader of the Haryana Congress legislature Party on Friday reached a bank branch in Gurugram to meet the general public who were standing in queues to get currency.

After meeting the public, Tanwar while talking to the mediapersons said that the decision of demonetisation of `500 and `1,000 note was wrong and should be withdrawn.

He said general public is suffering due to his decision. The farmers are worst hit due to this.

Tanwar also directed his party workers to help the people standing in queues outside various bank branches in the state and ensure that they do not face any inconvenience outside the banks.

On the other hand, Kiran Choudhry said that demonitisation, especially the bar imposed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on the operations of district cooperative banks, has hit the farmers, reeling under huge losses inflicted on them by the policies and doings of the BJP Government, led by Manohar lal.

She also asked the State Government to bail them out.

The former Excise and Taxation Minister said that lakhs of farmers across the state had their accounts in the branches of district cooperative banks having deep penetration in the rural areas which suited the farmers. But, now that these have been debarred by the RBI from carrying out any transactions in the wake of demontisation, the farmers cannot deposit their proceeds from the sale of paddy which is in old currency, in their accounts. Neither can they draw money from their accounts as the bank cannot dish out old currency, said the ClP leader.

“Given this scenario, the farmers find themselves left in the lurch. This has hit them hard both ways. Those who have harvested the paddy crop and now want to sow wheat do not have money to buy seeds. And, the others who are yet to clean up fields cannot hire labour for want of cash in new currency”, Choudhry pointed out.
