Acting upon a complaint of a girl student against UK citizens for affixing fake visa on her passport, fraud, cheating and breach of trust besides duping her of Rs 8 lakh, the Punjab NRI Commission on Thursday asked its Inspector General to take an appropriate action in the matter.

Harpreet Goraya, who hails from Goraya village in Gurdaspur district, alleged in her complaint that on September 16, 2010, she went to UK on student VISA for one-and-a-half years and studied at University of Sunderland. “Her visa was due to expire on January 31, 2012, and this fact was known to Surinderjit Singh and Joginder Kaur, the owner of Glamour Eyes and Brows Black, where she was working. They tempted her that they would get her visa extended for further two years, if she pays Rs 8 lakh,” Commission’s spokesman said.

She submitted in her complaint that on January 26, 2012, she paid £4,672 from her saving account and remaining amount was agreed to be paid in India. “They took her passport and persons got affixed a fake visa on her passport and handed over to her just at the time of her flight on January 30, 2012,” he added. After reaching India on her previous visa, she was asked to make the remaining payment to Surinderjit’s relative Gurdev Singh Randhawa and his wife residing in Shashtri Nagar Batala for extending visa and air ticket. Subsequently, Rs 3,36,000 in cash was paid to them on February 16.

“On February 19, 2012, when I went to airport for going to UK, I was shocked to know that the visa was fake. I immediately called Joginder Kaur, who threatened me not to bring this fact in the notice of inquiry officer. My passport has been placed in the black list due to fake visa,” alleged Harpreet in her complaint. “Keeping in view the seriousness of this matter, the complaint has been sent to IG, NRI Affairs, to look into the matter to take an appropriate action and to intimate the Commission on or before September 10, 2013, about the action taken in this matter,” said the spokesperson.
