A 44-year-old person was arrested by the Chandigarh police for allegedly posing as an IPS officer on Saturday. The accused, Pravin Kumar Tiwari, claimed himself to be a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police at Intelligence Bureau, Chandigarh. Tiwari allegedly befooled a local resident, Sunil Rawat, even as police is suspecting that he has also committed fraud with many others too. Complainant Sunil Rawat alleged that Tiwari introduced himself as an IPS officer posted as DIG of IB.

The brother or Sunil was jailed in a cheating case registered against him and Tiwari claimed that he can help Rawat’s brother in getting bail from the court. However, when the complainant and accused met at a Hotel in Sector 43, the complainant doubted him and called the police. After the verification of the accused, it was revealed that Tiwari was impersonating as the DIG. He claimed that he had been posted in the city on deputation a few weeks back.

During investigations, police found that Tiwari was  a highly qualified person and had completed his llB. He started posing as an IPS official as many of his friends had cleared the UPSC examination and got through the IPS.

A case against Tiwari has been registered and further investigations are on in the matter, said Bhupinder Singh, SHO, PS 36. He has been sent to police remand for a day after being produced in a local court.
