Eyeing 2014 polls, Cong dons new look

With the approaching parliamentary elections, the State Congress is all set to don a new look with the blend of experienced and young faces at the helm in the next one month’s time.

The preliminary deliberation between the State leadership of the party with Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and other Central leaders of the party is over and shortlisting of the probable candidates in the new team is being done.

The party is taking a merit and performance oriented approach; and those workers and leaders whose performance mattered in the Assembly polls, will be awarded with crucial posts.

Unlike BJP, which is mulling options to appoint four spokespersons for four parliamentary constituencies, Congress is likely to retain the existing centralised system.

“Party will have the mixture of experienced as well as young leaders and dedicated workers will be awarded based on their merit,” said PCC Chief Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu. Sources said that reshuffling will also be done at district Congress committee levels.

“We don’t have any mention of one person-one post in the party’s constitution, but the practice has been adopted as a matter of morality and State unit is likely to adhere to it,” said Sukhu. He added that the organisation work will be done to take the policies and schemes of the Government to the public.

“Party is already seeing a new unity phase and all those senior leaders who although had some differences at some point of time, have come together to guide the party in the parliamentary elections,” said Sukhu.

He added that party’s focus will be on the parliamentary elections and any appointments in future will be made keeping the elections in mind. Sukhu did not rule out the possibility of new and young faces in the executive body.

Party sources said that the organisation is in the transition phase and efforts are being made to prepare the second line leadership in the State which would be effective after the veteran politicians like Virbhadra Singh and Vidya Stoke retires from active politics. Both the leaders have announced that it is their last stint.
