English Vinglish for police constables

In a bid to help constables deal with increasing number of crimes related with foreign nationals in the city, Chandigarh Police has taken an initiative to start English speaking course for them.

Talking to The Pioneer, Inspector General of Chandigarh Police, RP Upadhyaya, said "under this initiative, UT police will soon organise a crash course for the constable level officials where they will be taught English speaking."

The focus of the course will be on improving English listening and speaking skills, with native speakers providing one-on-one training. Trainees will attend the courses in their spare time, he added.

Several batches of UT police constables would be formed who would attend the two-hour class daily at a coaching centre. The prime reason to start English speaking course is that the Beat constable first receives information about a crime scene and he is the first officer to reach the crime spot. If the incident takes place with a person who knows only English, it becomes difficult for officials to take quick action or handle the situation.

"The need of English speaking constables was felt as a large number of foreigners come to the City," added the IGP.
