The UT Education Department has joined hands with NGOs to identify out-of-school children in the city and provide them quality education.

In this regard, a meeting of senior UT officials and NGOs was held on Wednesday. The officials of Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and principals of Government schools of the city also attended the meeting. Kamlesh Kumar, DPI (schools) during the meeting, said that NGOs are an important link between the street children and the UT Education Department. Thus, their support is required in monitoring of the out-of-school children so that they can be send to their neighbouring schools.”

“The NGOs role is also important to follow up, after the children are admitted in schools so that they do not drop out,” he added. Emphasising on the importance of implementation of Right To Education Act 2009, the DPI said that the street children are left out because they are not being located due to the migratory nature of their parents. Thus, counseling of the parents is the area where the NGOs have to play an important role, he said.

At the meeting, NGO’s welcomed the venture of UT Education Department and offered their support to the Department. In a survey conducted by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) last year, 5538 children in the age group 6-14 have been enrolled in Government schools for academic session 2013-14.
