ED summons Capt Amarinder's son

The Enforcement Directorate has issued summons to Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh’s son Raninder Singh for an alleged violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

The summons has been issued by the ED’s assistant director Ajay Singh for June 16.  The ED will probe Raninder’s assets abroad through foreign entities and the use of suspected hawala transactions.

It has been learnt that the summons may be issued against Capt Amarinder Singh also later on. Earlier, ludhiana’s Chief Judicial Magistrate Ranjeet Sharma, following a complaint filed by the Income Tax department, has asked Raninder Singh to appear in the court on the next date of hearing, that is July 26.

The complaint claimed that Raninder Singh “lied on oath” to the IT department about trusts allegedly owned by him in British Virgin Islands as well as about money in Switzerland-based accounts.

The complaint, filed by Amit Dua, IT (investigations) Deputy Director, under section 277 of the IT Act, 1961, and sections 177 and 181 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), stated that the accused is a beneficiary of foreign assets maintained and controlled through foreign business entities.

The complaint alleged that the accused had denied it by submitting a “wrong” affidavit in April last year.

The complaint also stated that Capt Amarinder was a discretionary beneficiary of Jacaranda Trust, UK, associated with his son Raninder Singh.
