To promote energy efficient and environment-friendly technologies in Indian small and medium enterprises (SMEs), the electric heat pump (EHP) system has been commissioned at Verka Milk Plant at Chandigarh as a pilot project.
Claiming to be the first of its kind in India, `1.8 crore Project has been executed by Punjab milk corporative-Milkfed, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Institute of Global Environment Strategies (IGES), Japan; and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
EHP system was installed by the engineers from Mayekawa Manufacturing Company limited, Japan under a four-year research project titled “Application of low Carbon Technology” being undertaken by TERI, New Delhi, jointly with the IGES.
The pilot project, introduced in India at Verka Milk Plant, will result in saving of energy to the tune of `35 lakh per annum and reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission by 47 per cent.
Speaking on the occasion, Milkfed managing director Alaknanda Dayal appreciated the initiative by TERI and IGES for implementation of low carbon technologies, especially in developing countries like India. She also expressed hope that application of such technologies will be replicated by the processing industry in general and dairy industry in particular to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
She said that application of these low carbon technologies can help the Indian Industry in securing carbon credits under Kyoto Protocol and saving in foreign exchange.
