Welcoming Punjab Revenue Minister Bikram Majithia’s offer for a CBI inquiry into drug trafficking, the State Congress urged him not to waste time and get the said inquiry ordered at the earliest.
“The party accepts the reported offer made by Majithia for the CBI to probe drug trafficking in Punjab. If made sincerely, this offer can be the turning point towards a lasting solution to the problem of drug menace that Punjab faces today,” said Punjab Congress spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira.
He said as they were aware that Jagdish Bhola drug racket has shaken the State with seizures of more than `1,000 crore worth of locally manufactured drugs. “His revelations have also opened a Pandora’s box indicating towards a deep nexus between drug mafia-powerful politicians and the police,” he added.
Khaira added the arrest of Bittu Aulakh, Youth Akali Dal’s general secretary has pointed a direct finger towards party MP Rattan Singh Ajnala, his MlA son Bonny Ajnala and also the Revenue Minister being YAD president.
Similarly, earlier the seizure of large cache of `500 crore worth of drugs from Raja Kandhola’s farmhouse near Samrala in ludhiana district, had also pointed towards a similar nexus operating in Punjab, he pointed.
“Even as the Punjab Police have been able to catch small fish in the said drug manufacturing and trafficking but due to its extreme politicisation by the Akali Government, it is highly impossible for them to catch the sharks involved in the dangerous trade. Punjab Police did not have the courage to interrogate or question Majithia, MP Ajnala or his MlA son, who are being accused of promoting and shielding druglords,” he added.
Khaira concluded, “Congress reiterates its demand for a thorough CBI probe to unearth the unholy nexus between politicians, police and the drug mafia which could once and for all put an end to the drug menace, destroying the youth of Punjab.”
