Don't cause rail disruption, Akali Dal appeals to farmers

The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Tuesday told a section of farmer organisations, who have called for a two-day rail roko programme starting Wednesday, not to cause disruption and chaos in the State for their “narrow vested interests”.

“The farmer organisations including the BKU Ekta and Ugrahan had resorted to the same actions when the SAD-BJP Government unbundled the erstwhile PSEB,” said SAD MPs Prem Singh Chandumajra and Balwinder Singh Bhunder, in a joint statement.

He said that the same farmer organisations had painted a doomsday picture but the new electricity utility has emerged as the best utility in the country and is even operating at a profit.

MPs said that even now the farmer organisations were misleading the people of Punjab about the actions taken by State Government following the white fly attack on the cotton crop. “Punjab is paying the most compensation vis-à-vis any other State in the country for crop damage,” they claimed.

They cautioned the people of the State to understand the conspiracy which was afoot to destabilise the hard won peace in Punjab. “The rail roko will only lead to disruption and chaos and could lead to a law and order problem which is not in the interest of Punjab. The people of the State want development and should shun such elements who want to create social turmoil,” they added.
