The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report (ATR) from the Dhenkanal Superintendent of Police (SP) over inaction of district police administration within four weeks.
According to complainant Sangita Swain, a rights activist and secretary of Angul-based Human Rights Watch, victim woman Banaja Kumari Sahoo had lodged a FIR at Motanga police station in Dhenkanal district against her husband Suryamani Sahu, who got married to another woman namely Panchali Sahu, alleging that he beat her up mercilessly resulting in abortion of her foetus.
“Though the victim Banaja Kumari Sahoo, a resident of Kala village under Barkot police station in Deogarh district had lodged FIR at Motanga police station in informing the torture meted out to her by her husband and second wife, the police took no action,” alleged the petitioner.
She urged the commission to take stringent action against the concerned officials for not acting legally on her complaint, besides urging the apex human rights body to give compensation of Rs20 lakh to the victim woman. The case is another case of brazen voilence against women.
