Denied party ticket to contest 2017 Punjab polls, former Minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur on Thursday quit the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The Congress sources indicated that he may join the party.
SAD, which had on Wednesday declared the names of 69 candidates out of total 94 for 2017 polls it will contest in alliance with the BJP, has dropped Phillaur.
The name of Phillaur’s son, Damanvir Singh, surfaced in multi-crore drug racket and he was also questioned by the ED following which the senior Akali leader was asked to step down from the Cabinet. He was apparently denied ticket on the same grounds.
Four-time MlA, Phillaur won the 2012 polls from Kartarpur Assembly segment by barely 800 votes.
