Expressing concerns over the climate change, the experts at ‘TROPMET 2015’ on Tuesday emphasised the need of incorporation of the social scientists in the climate change studies.

‘TROPMET 2015’ which entered its third day on Tuesday witnessed presentations dealt with weather predictions, the impact of global trends on local climates and the response of human lifestyles to climate change. The experts also emphasised on the ramifications of the climate change on the human health.

Dr Saji Hameed, a plenary speaker from the University of Aizu, Japan highlighted the role of El Nino and its impact on weather extremes. He said that the Indian Ocean and its temperatures are of immense importance in predicting the behavior and occurrence of El Nino event – this parameter is invariably excluded in most calculations. This ocean has special relevance for Indian weather conditions and the monsoon in particular.

Professor Rajesh Gill, Fellow Panjab University who spoke on the interface between climate change and society, emphasized the need of incorporation of the Social Scientists in the climate change studies, because, after all, it is the behavior of society that determines the accelerated rate at which climate is changing.

‘TROPMET 2015’ symposium has been organised keeping in mind the weather extremes and resultant disasters like floods, cyclones and cloud bursts that have been experienced in the recent past.

The symposium has brought together people from various professions including academia, practitioners and industry representatives which has led to the discussion of a wide range of topics on weather and climate extremes that touched on all aspects of climate, its trends, its prediction, its impacts and human response to climate change. The symposium will conclude on February 18.
