Dal Khalsa to rally youth support against drug menace

Peeved over the drug menace, criminalisation of politics, crime against women and vulgarity in culture, the youth wing of the Sikh radical outfit Dal Khalsa — Sikh Youth of Punjab (SYP) — has decided to organise a youth rally against the same at Amritsar on October 7.

The youth body has resolved to adopt a pro-active approach to create mass awareness against drug abuse and other social evils that has plagued the society so badly, said SYP president Nobeljit Singh, after the party’s meeting held on Sunday. He said that the synthetic drug manufactured locally is taking toll on State’s youth. Expressing grief over the loss of precious lives, the meeting mourned the deaths of people of Jammu & Kashmir in the worst natural disaster.

It lauded the role of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Khalsa Aid and many others in extending all forms of support and relief to the victims.

“We are in touch with the representatives of Kashmir groups and they have informed us that the affected persons are in need of blankets and woollen clothes,” said Dal Khalsa spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh while addressing the meet. He urged the people at large and Sikh Diaspora to come forward to provide relief material to the populace of the valley. “We have also decided that their representatives will visit Jammu and Kashmir once the water will recede,” he added.

Commenting on Punjab government’s post-poll drive to tackle the drug menace, Kanwar Pal Singh said that it was forgotten chapter now. “Without yielding any desired result, the hype has lost its steam,” he said.

“The State Government has arrested hundreds of addicts, mostly youth, while the police arrest consumers, none of the big suppliers or producers have fallen in their net,” he said.

Failing to handle the menace, he said that the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister were passing the buck by simply saying that the drug inflow in Punjab is from Pakistan. “The drug cartel cannot be operated without the connivance of politicians and the police,” he said.

“The non-seriousness of the Punjab Government to curb the drug abuse is reflected from the statement of the deputy Chief Minister, when he denied any patronage extended to the illicit drug trade by politicians in Punjab,” he added.
