Chandigarh MP and former Union Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal on Monday expressed serious concern over the UT Administration’s failure to cut overgrown trees in the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

In a letter to the KK Sharma, Adviser to the UT Administration, the local MP stated, “I fully understand and uphold the need to increase the green cover and plant and preserve trees, but I fail to appreciate the reluctance to cut down trees that stand on the extended width of the roads, new slip roads and slow carriage roads.” The local MP said that such trees poses threat to life and property in the city.

Bansal said in his letter that he had even spoken to the Adviser earlier about the need to remove the overgrown trees in the city which pose a threat to life and property. He added there are huge trees mostly eucalyptus which belong to commercial and not the social forestry family. The local MP also suggested that the UT Administration and Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh to undertake a joint drive to plant at least 10 trees for every one tree that is cut down for reasons of safety.
