The curfew imposed in Haryana’s Punhana town in Mewat area of Gurgaon to curb any outbreak between two communities, would continue till Monday morning. The curfew was imposed following the killing of a youth.

RC Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Mewat said  that we would review the situation on Monday morning before lifting the curfew from this place. “If we find the situation calm, we would decide to remove it, otherwise it may extend further”, said Verma. Tension had escalated in the Punhana-Meo-dominated region of Mewat after a 22-year-old youth, Wajid, was found dead on April 11 night with bullet injuries.

Wajid, a resident of Nakanpur area of Punhana, was shot in the head, police said. His body was buried on April 12 after post-mortem examination. Verma added that as precautionary measures on Saturday, we imposed curfew in Punhana town of Mewat area and we had given relaxation for two hours from 5pm to 7pm there on Saturday and ten hours on Sunday from 10am to 7pm. Most of the shops remained closed in this area even on third day of the incident here.

“No untoward incident was reported during this period on Sunday”, said Verma. He also said that they have already deputed 1,000 persons in uniform, including Army, two companies of Central Reserve Police Force and Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Haryana police to maintain law and order here.

Meanwhile, six police complaints — three each from the Meo (Muslim) and the Hindu communities — related to conflicts and clashes were lodged at Punhana police station.  Though the exact cause of death could not be ascertained yet, the local Police have started further investigation in this case.

Police have registered a separate complaint over Wajid’s murder, in which nine people have been named. The nine — Raju, Rajkumar, Nigam, Ravi, Ratan lal, Vinod, Islamuddin, Jubair Khan and Aslam — have been accused of murder. However, no one has been arrested so far.
