Crime against women on rise: 1 held in 3 cases

Despite claiming to provide a safe environment for women, the Chandigarh Police seems to have failed as cases related to sexual harassment are on the rise in the city, with three cases being reported on Saturday.

While one accused was arrested in one case, in the other two, the miscreants managed to flee before an alarm was raised.

In the first case,  a lady resident of Sector-28 alleged that a resident of Sector-28 on Friday allegedly eve teased her, quarreled with her and also threatened her. The accused was identified as Gurjit Singh, a resident of Sector 28. Police arrested him and registered a case at Police Station Sector-26. The accused was later sent to judicial custody by the court on Saturday.

In the second case, a city woman alleged that a youth on Thursday abducted her seven year-old daughter and tried to rape her near her home at sector-34 while she was playing outside her home. However the accused in the case was not identified.

In another case, a girl of Sector 34 alleged that two people intended to outrage her modesty and also threatened her while she went to the market.

Police has been unable to identify the accused in both the cases so far and the cases are under progress,” said a police official.
