The UT Administration has decided to launch a crackdown on the auto-rickshaws from Punjab and Haryana plying illegally in the city.

In view of violations done by auto-rickshaws coming from neighboring States, the State Transport Authority (STA) will launch a special drive to challan/impound diesel auto rickshaws. The auto rickshaws are considered as major transport mode of the city. Over 2,500 lPG run auto rickshaws are plying in the city while petrol and diesel run auto rickshaws plying in the city generally come from neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana.

Though electronic fare meters is installed in all lPG auto rickshaws registered with STA, many diesel and petrol auto rickshaws continue fleecing the passengers and keep away from the use of fare meters. STA Secretary Mahavir Kaushik said auto rickshaw and taxi operators are advised to install and keep the fare meter in working order otherwise high penalty will be charged as per Motor Vehicle Act.

“Public at large is advised not to use such auto rickshaws to avoid inconvenience. Soon, STA will start a special drive to challan/impound diesel auto rickshaws which are coming from Punjab and Haryana which do not have valid documents and which have completed their life span of 15 years,” he added.

Meanwhile, to curb the tendency of plying unauthorized vehicles with incomplete documents, driving overloaded vehicles and make the city pollution free, the STA carried out intensive checking campaign of commercial vehicles during the month of August. More than 2000 vehicles were checked and 437 were challaned/impounded/issued notices.
