Congress to decide remaining candidates today

Published on:

Congress party’s Central election committee, headed by its national president Sonia Gandhi, will meet on Wednesday to discuss the names of party candidates for Punjab polls, scheduled early next year, at Delhi.

The party has, so far, announced the names of 77 candidates out of 117 Assembly segments.

Treading cautiously, the Congress has strategically delayed the declaration of candidates on the controversial seats, and from where the party is planning to field the turncoat MlAs including former Akalis Inderbir Singh Bolaria, Pargat Singh, Mahesh Inder Singh, Rajinder Kaur Bhagike, and former BJP leader Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu.

Congress has already kept aside the Amritsar East seat for the Sidhus, with State party chief Capt Amarinder Singh maintaining that it was up to the firebrand couple to decide who want to contest as the Congress is following ‘one family, one seat’ rule.

The party has, so far, retained 37 of its sitting legislators while dropping the two.

Ahead the meeting, Capt Amarinder on Tuesday met party’s vice-president Rahul Gandhi to discuss the situation in the context of forthcoming polls.
