Congress Rajya Sabha MP raises banner of revolt against own Govt

Congress’ Rajya Sabha MP Partap Bajwa has raised a banner of revolt against his own party’s government in Punjab. Raising the issue of state’s sugarcane growers, Bajwa on Tuesday threatened to sit on dharna along with the protesting farmers against his own party government for delay in payment of their arrears along with the interest for the delayed period.

That was not all! Bajwa has even threatened to move the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the non-payment of dues, if the Government did not move.

Bajwa appealed to the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to intervene in the matter at the earliest so that the farmers do not suffer any further.

“The State Government should force the private millers to start cane crushing and pay dues of the farmers by any means,” said Bajwa.

Private sugar mills, owned by several politicians across the party lines, are demanding that the government should give them Rs 35 per quintal as subsidy, before they start buying and crushing cane.

This is not for the first time Bajwa has gone public against his own government. Ealrier, Bajwa has criticised Congress-led Punjab Government for its “not-so-satisfactory” performance in its first year.

Meanwhile, Bajwa, who had been the state Congress president, also advised the State party leaders to work for strengthening the party chief Rahul Gandhi in the run up to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. “The government and the party leaders should not do anything which would weaken the party at this point of time,” said Bajwa.
