Cong stopped stipend given to farmers: Jaitley

Published on:

The SAD-BJP combine candidate Arun Jaitley on Friday came down heavily on Congress and its rival candidate Capt Amarinder Singh for allegedly having failed in providing any practical relief to the farmers facing multiple problems.

Jaitley dared Congress to reply why it stopped the compensation scheme to farmers whose land fall across the barbed fence, launched by the Vajpayee Government. Why the DAP is being sold today at a rate of Rs1,125 and diesel at Rs54 which were available during the Vajpayee regime at Rs467 and Rs20.75 respectively.

Addressing a rally at Attari, Jaitley asserted that ten year back the very first job the UPA Government did was to immediately stop the compensation given to farmers, adding insult to injury to the marginal farmers.

He appreciated the SAD-BJP State Government who started giving compensation at the rate of Rs2,500 per acre despite the fact that the UPA Government did not provide a pie for that. Jaitley promised that the compensation will be increased once new Government took over reins of power in centre.

Expressing concern over the rising drug menace in the State, Jaitley said that after assuming power in the Centre, we shall take strong measures to curb the menace as strictly as the terrorist infiltration.

Cong files complaint against Majithia

Amritsar: Senior Congress leader and former Deputy speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Bir Devinder Singh on Friday complained to Chief Election Commissioner of India VS Sampath and the District Returning Officer cum-Deputy Commissioner Amritsar Ravi Bhagat, demanding that Punjab Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia be banned from addressing public rallies.

In his complaint, Bir Devinder alleged that Majithia used objectionable words during his speech on 24 April to the Kambhoj community at Shaheed Udham Singh Hall at Amritsar. He exhorted the gathering to raise their hands and repeat after him Shabad (religious hymn) of Guru Gobind Singh from the holy Dasam Grant Sahib by distorting the original holy hymn, it was alleged.

He added that this act, aimed at polarisation of communities, will clearly lead to a serious law and order problem in Punjab and elsewhere in a already surcharged political atmosphere. Bir

Devinder also filed complaint before the Jathedar Akal Takht for suitable action.

‘Indo-Pak peace important for building trade centre’

Amritsar: Congress candidate from Amritsar, Capt Amarinder Singh on Friday assured to help in rebuilding Amritsar as an important trade centre as it used to be prior Independence. He said, for this it was important that there were friendly relations between India and Pakistan.

Amarinder recalled that Amritsar used to be bustling with trade activity before partition and added that the unfortunate developments of partition pushed the city to the margin.

Addressing the gathering of industrialists, traders, doctors and other intellectuals of the city, he expressed hope and confidence that the world had moved ahead and there was greater cooperation between countries. “Nations were coming closer for better trade and there was no reason why India and Pakistan cannot come closer”, he said, hoping that the war mongering rhetoric resorted to by certain parties come down.

Capt Amarinder maintained that Amritsar will not be a trade centre between India and Pakistan alone but the entire central Asia and central east countries. “I can foresee a better future for Amritsar as trust and confidence starts building up”, he said,

while hoping that the two countries set aside differences in the interest of the people of their countries.
