Haryana Congress has strongly condemned the resolution moved by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and voted unanimously by the state Assembly
stating that the SYl Canal cannot be allowed to be constructed at any cost.
It is an open defiance of the Supreme Court of India which has ordered status quo ante on the SYl issue, and an open affront to the federal structure of the country, said Kiran Choudhry, leader of the Haryana Congress legislature Party (ClP) on Friday.
She said, “It is symptomatic of complete breakdown of the federal structure of the country. Water is a national heritage and does not belong any one state. Going against the order of SC is an autocratic and defiant move and will lead to constitutional crisis in the neighboring states.”
“It does not behove Badal who is the most seasoned politician in the region. That he would be resorting to such unconstitutional tactics purely for political gains is shocking indeed. That a person who has been fighting for federal structure will strike a blow to it is quite unbecoming of him. The SYl is the lifeline of the farmers of Haryana and the state should be given its legitimate share of water. Haryana will not tolerate this move of the Punjab Government,” Choudhry said.
The BJP Government at the Centre should intervene in the matter and direct the Punjab Government, where it shares power with SAD, to abide by the orders of the apex court, she demanded.
While talking to the mediapersons outside the
Haryana Vidhan Sabha, the Congress legislators said that ignoring the Apex Court orders, work to fill and level SYl canal at Kapoori in Punjab is still under progress.
Former Speaker and Congress legislator Kuldeep Sharma said that to take stock of the situation at the ground level, a delegation of Haryana Congress MlAs had visited Punjab and found that work to dismantle and level the disputed SYl canal was on at Kapoori in Punjab.
