A local Congress leader was seriously injured after two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire on him in Ropar district on Sunday.
Rajwant Singh Gill, a resident of Kharar, was returning in his car on the Chamkaur Sahib-Neelon road after paying obeisance at a Gurdwara Jhaarr Sahib about 10 kilometres from Chamkaur Sahib, when they fired on him, said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Indermohan Singh.
A bullet hit Gill on his left arm after piercing through the wind screen of the car. He drove away his car to Chamkaur Sahib hospital from where he was referred to PGIMER Chandigarh. He was admitted to the hospital with three bullet wounds, the officer said.
Gill, who is president of Mahatma Gandhi Welfare Sanghthan, was on the hit list of militants as he was reportedly very critical against terrorist activities during the 1980s. Recently, his security had been withdrawn by the Punjab police as per the directives of the Supreme Court.
A case has been registered under section 307 (Attempt to murder) against unknown persons in this regard and further investigation is on, SSP Singh added.
