Cong in damage control mode

After the maximum dent, the Congress party in Punjab is adopting damage control measure. With 10 senior Congress leaders signing their resignations, while around 15 have expressed their displeasure over the list of office bearers of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) in the past ten days, Congress at last wake up to address the discontentment brewing within the party.

Party’s State party affairs in-charge Shakeel Ahmad has finally assured the discontented leaders that the party high command was ready to address their grievances, giving indications of “reconsidering” the PPCC list.

At the same time, Ahmad has also asked the leaders, those who are left out or those who were not given the post of their choice, not to cry their grievances in the media.

“Some people appear disgruntled. We are ready to iron out if there are any differences. If some important names have been omitted, we are ready to consider it,” said Ahmad, while not hiding his displeasure over some leaders voicing their Opposition to the list, announced last month.

“If some people have grievances and concerns, they should raise it in party fora. Expressing unhappiness over the list or criticising it in public is not good,” he said.

His remarks came a day after Punjab PCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa, who is under fire from the rebelling leaders met him and explained his position.

When contacted Bajwa, he said that he as the PCC chief had only recommended the names, and “names were cleared by party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi. All senior leaders were consulted and many of their recommendations were accommodated,” he added.

Bajwa also lauded the new list saying it has given 33 pe cent representation to those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and representatives of all sections have been included.

Ahmad and Bajwa’s assertions came a day before the newly-constituted PPCC is set to meet on Monday to prepare the strategy for lok Sabha polls.
