Having put in place the State executive team, Punjab Congress has now focused its attention on early appointment of District and Block level Committees.
Attending the first meet of the newly appointed Punjab Congress office bearers in Chandigarh on Tuesday, Punjab Congress Chief Capt Amarinder Singh directed all the District Congress Presidents to be ready with their proposal of names for District committees within a week.
The Congress tried to put a united face in the first meeting of the new office bearers, in which most of the senior
leaders like AICC General Secretary Shakeel Ahmad, Congress Campaign Committee in-charge Ambika Soni, former Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, AICC secretary Harish Chaudhary, MP Chaudhary Santokh and Ravneet Bittu participated.
PCC senior vice president laal Singh, Shamsher Singh Dullo, AICC secretaries Kuljeet Nagra, Ashwani Sekhri, former PCC president HS Hanspal, Manpreet Singh Badal, Rana Gurjeet Singh, Kewal Dhillon were also present.
Appealing to the Congress office bearers not to be carried away by the AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) hype, Captain Amarinder said that Congress was certain to win the next Assembly elections.
He said that Congress was the oldest party of the State and it was Congress only that had fought elections during
militancy in the State, when SAD had withdrawn itself from the democratic process.
Congress General Secretary and the in-charge for Punjab, Shakeel Ahmad asked the newly appointed office bearers of the PCC to ensure that they took along everyone so that nobody felt left out. It was not possible for the Congress president Sonia Gandhi to nominate all the deserving people to the posts of vice presidents or General Secretaries, but the services of each worker are important for party and no one will be
overlooked, he said.
Taking a dig at AAP, Ahmad said that AAPs fate was getting unfolded gradually as had been proved by Delhi Municipal bye-elections results, where it lost 8 of the 13 municipal wards it contested.
Even in Punjab, after
winning four seats in the Parliament, the AAP fought two assembly bye-elections in Patiala and Talwandi Sabo and lost deposit in both and did not dare to contest any more
by-elections, he said.
Addressing the meet Ambika Soni said that the office bearers were the
backbone of the party. “Party’s fate rests on your shoulders and the Congress President Sonia Gandhi has placed lot of faith and responsibility in you”, she said.
PCC vice president laal Singh said that the responsibilities of all the offices bearers would be allocated by the end of this month. He said that the District Congress Committees would be put in place by May 27 and on May 30 the General House meeting of the Congress had been called, where the future course of action would be finalised.
