Cong demands permission for farmers for unlimited withdrawals

Haryana Congress on Wednesday asked the Manohar lal Khattar Government to impress upon the Central Government to tell the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to allow the farmers “unlimited withdrawal” from their bank accounts.

The Congress demanded that unlimited withdrawal should be allowed to farmer to facilitate sowing of wheat and other crops.

“The cap imposed on weekly withdrawals in the wake of demonitisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, is badly hurting the sowing operations,” said Kiran Choudhry, leader of the Haryana Congress legislature Party.

The former excise and taxation minister said the farmers, reeling under huge losses inflicted on them by the policies pursued by the State Government, deserve special treatment so that they can complete the sowing which has been hurt by the cash crunch caused by demonitisation, and the curbs imposed on the district cooperative banks by the RBI.

There should have been no need to make this demand had the NDA Government at the Centre spared a thought for the farmers and their needs while announcing demonitisation and imposing the attendant restrictions, and the Manohar lal Government in the state taken up their cause with the Centre, said Choudhry.

Both keep shedding crocodile tears over the farmers’ plight but have done little for them. On the contrary, both governments have hurt them financially and driven them deep into despair by wrong policies and unwanted curbs”, she added.

The Congress leader demanded that considering the constraints faced by the farmers, the BJP Government should move fast and come to their rescue. Any delay in bailing them out will damage the prospects of the wheat crop sowing of which has already been delayed and is way behind schedule”, she added.
