Welcoming Punjab BJP president Kamal Sharma’s statement on supporting demand for building peace memorial dedicated to over 25,000 innocent civilians and police officials killed during terrorism, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee on Wednesday asked the saffron party to take decisive stand on the issue.
“On one hand, the BJP has taken divergent stand from its ruling partner Shiromani Akali Dal, and on the other, they are continuing alliance with it,” said PPCC spokesman Sukhpal Khaira and PPCC general secretary Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa, in a joint statement. They said that it was unfortunate to note that ruling SAD was not ready to construct ‘peace memorial’ dedicated to innocent Punjabis who were killed by the terrorists.
“People would not trust BJP if they continue to adopt double standards and they must question its alliance partner for opposing the memorial. SAD is playing communal card in Punjab and BJP is busy in communal divide in the country. But, none of them is serious to the real cause. let BJP take firm stand on peace memorial and prove its seriousness,” they said.
The duo said that the Congress was not demanding any memorial for its leaders, but innocent civilians who were martyred also deserve due recognition.
