Complaints against UT cops on BYJM's helpline

Buzzing continuously with calls, the Chandigarh BJYM’s anti-corruption helpline is flooded with complaints related to Chandigarh Police. After its launch in the month of September, a large number of complaints against Chandigarh Police are received at the anti-corruption helpline. Interestingly, the complaints are received not only from city residents but from outsiders as well.

Since the launch of the helpline, people from across the country have been responding to it with full gusto. As per the data available with the city BJYM (Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha), more than 5000 complaints have been registered so far and around 900 are received from the city denizens.

A large number of complaints are received against Chandigarh Traffic Police and callers from outside Chandigarh have alleged unnecessary harassment by the UT Police deployed at major junctions in the city.

While talking to The Pioneer, Amit Rana, Chandigarh BJYM president said, “within the first month of its launch, more than 15 complaints related to Chandigarh Police were received at the helpline.” “Though we are yet to compile the whole data, the number of complaints against the UT Police has been rising. It is not only the city residents but people from the neighboring states are also registering complaints against the UT Police,” said he.

Talking about the nature of complaints, Rana said, “most of the complaints are related to alleged harassment by Chandigarh Traffic Police. Many callers from neighboring states have called in at the helpline and have shared their experiences… The outsiders have alleged that the UT Traffic Police is deliberately targeting the vehicles which are not bearing Chandigarh registration number… They have also alleged that personnels of UT Traffic Police have demanded bribe from them at major junctions in the city.”

Considering the increasing number of complaints against the UT Police, a delegation of Chandigarh BJYM had also met UT DIG AS Cheema and apprized him about the complaints received at the anti-corruption helpline.

Rana informed, “we have already met UT DIG AS Cheema and have urged him to take appropriate and immediate action against the corrupt police officials in the Chandigarh Police Department. The city BJYM has also apprised him about the large number of complaints and nature of these complaints.”

With an aim to ensure corruption free Chandigarh, the helpline number ‘09653333383’ was launched under the anti-corruption campaign named “Na Khayuga Na Khane Dunga” at BJP office here in September. The city BJP’s youth wing was the first one in the country to launch the anti-corruption helpline.

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that neither he will take bribe nor he would allow anybody to take bribe, the BJP Yuva Morcha, Chandigarh had conceptualized the unique campaign “Na Khayuga Na Khane Dunga” and launched the anti-corruption helpline.

Around 400 calls are registered on the helpline everyday.  So far, most of the complaints received at the helpline are from outside Chandigarh. The city BJYM president added, “If any public servant demands bribe or does not do your legal work or intentionally delays your work then, one can call on party’s anti-corruption helpline number.”
