Cold grips Punjab and Haryana while Shimla relatively warmer

Adampur was the coldest place in Punjab on Saturday recording a low of 5 degrees Celsius, as cold weather conditions prevailed in most parts of the State and neighbouring Haryana.

Union Territory Chandigarh, the joint capital of the States, recorded a minimum of 9 degrees Celsius while the temperature in Adampur was 5 degrees Celsius, a MeT official said here.

In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a minimum of 6.8 degrees Celsius while Patiala and ludhiana recorded minimums of 9.2 degrees Celsius and 10.9 degrees Celsius respectively.

In Haryana, Ambala recorded a minimum of 10.4 degrees Celsius while Hisar’s low was 6.8 degrees Celsius, four degrees below the normal, the official said.

Karnal, Rohtak and Narnaul recorded minimums of 7 degrees Celsius, 6.5 degrees Celsius and 7.4 degree Celsius, respectively, up to three degrees below the normal.

The temperature in the neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, however, saw a rising trend. Shimla, located around 7,000 feet above sea level, saw a low of 10.6 degrees, a rise of four degrees from Friday, and Dharamsala 7 degrees Celsius.

Hill stations across Himachal Pradesh have been experiencing long hours of sunny weather for the past few days and the temperatures in most places have risen by three-four degrees above the season’s average.

The maximum temperature in Shimla is likely to hover around 18 degrees Celsius.  However, picturesque tourist resort Manali was in the grip of bone-chilling 0.4 degrees Celsius.

At 5.4 degrees below the freezing point, Keylong in lahaul-Spiti district was the coldest in Himachal Pradesh.

The weather in Himachal’s popular destinations like Kasauli, Chail, Kufri, Narkanda and Palampur is expected to be sunny.

The weatherman said this trend would continue in the hills till the western disturbances — storm systems originating from the Caspian Sea and moving across the Afghanistan-Pakistan region — are active in the region.
