A steep rise in the number of hit-and-run cases in City Beautiful has given sleepless nights to the officials of UT Police. Most of such cases go undetected for want of eyewitnesses and many of them remain unsolved.

More than 126 accident cases in the year 2013 have been reported in the city so far. Out of these cases, more than 52 cases were reported as hit-and-run.

In such cases, the drivers at fault flee from the spot leaving the injured unattended.

Out of the 126 accidents, 13 were reportedly fatal as victims were left unattended after the accused fled the spot.

Nine cases were reported in which officials of Chandigarh Police were hit while they were on check-post duty. Out of these cases, accused in three incidents sped away from the spot.

Chandigarh Police on Saturday reported two such cases of hit and run.

In the first case, a pedestrian Vishal Kumar, resident of Sector-38 was run over by a rashly driven car bearing Punjab registration number (PB-03F-0989) on the dividing road of Sector-16/10.

In another case, Sajjad Ahmad, resident of Sector-29 reported to police that a white colout swift car bearing Punjab registration number (PB-23J-9693) sped away after hitting his car near roundabout of Sector-19/27.

The accused in both the cases fled from the spot after hitting the victims. Police in both the cases have registered FIRs against the owners of the cars. “Further investigation is under progress,” said a senior police official.

The official further admitted that the pedestrians are the most likely victims in hit and run cases. The eye witnesses in such cases should immediately note down the registration number of the involved vehicle, which helps police to nab the culprit.
