To commemorate Gandhi Jayanti, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh on Sunday dedicated a material recovery facility (MRF)-cum-garbage transfer station completely to women. Mayor Sarbjit Kaur Dhillon handed over the operations of the MRF of Sector 25 to the ‘women team’ and named the centre as “Pink MRF”. It is the first of its kind in the country where only women workers will operate. It is also the first unit of MCC to have only female workers. The pink workforce includes 20 helpers, DEOs, and security guards. The helpers were drawn from those who were earlier working as rag pickers. They will now perform the duty of segregating dry waste on conveyer belt.
